I think 50% of all bad dreams I have are about crashing planes, that probably comes from the life experience. I am very afraid of flying on planes, but I always fly them. I had a fun chat with Andrejs about it yesterday:
Andrejs: Why are you afraid of them? You don't trust planes?
Me: I trust them, I really do, but I just don't understand how they do not fall...
It also reminded me of a situation when my cousin just finished his bachelor in bank administration and my uncle asked him "So now you know how does bank work?" He said "Yeah, I do, I just cannot understand where banks get money from" :)

Always consider the statistics. This topic is also mentioned in "Freekonomics". You should be afraid of going in the car, because statistically you have far higher chance of getting into a car accident and dying than experiencing a plane crash.
The common reason for such fears is usually that people are afraid of things they cannot control. As they think they can fully control the fate of the car, they are not afraid of cars.
yep, I completely agree. Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. [http://www.fearlessflight.com/airplane-disasters-plane-crash-statistics]
Those chances are low, but they still exist :)
