Day 34, Dazu carvings

Dazu place just 160 km from Chongqing was a cool place to see. It's a place of historical Buddhist cave carvings which impressed us with it's sophistication and amount of statues all being carved in stone.

For hundreds of years, those statues has been standing here holding stone pagodas. The pagodas are estimated to weigh half a ton and its weight is transferred to the stone sleeves.

Guess how many hands does this Buddha have! 50? 100? 1000?

No! It's 1007!

15-m long Buddha laying on his side. Andrejs speculates that smilies were invented by looking at this statue :)

There was also a cave with three big Buddhas inside, very much impressive, but it wasn't allowed to take any pictures :(
I didn't read all the descriptions of every carving, so that's pretty much all I remember about them. Some other carvings, which we liked
