I started to read Fellowship of the ring more than a month ago. A friend of mine who absolutely hated the book gave me all the 3 parts of Lord of the rings as a present. And I started reading it. As it was written on the book "English-speaking world is divided into 2 parts. Those who read Lord of the rings and those who are going to read it". Right now I'm something in between. I've read 2 parts and stopped for some undetermined period. I have mixed feelings about this book. Sometimes I feel so bored of Tolkien's detailed descriptions that I feel I almost can give up on reading, however sometimes it gets so exciting that I start feeling guilty I ever felt that way. Now I am done with Two Towers part and feel like I need a break from Tolkien before I start the last part. Who knows any good (not very big) books? Would appreciate your advice

"Lord of the Rings" is horrible. Extremely boring indeed. I read them all a long time ago, but if I knew that they would make movies, I would never have read them.
Recently I have read "Rayuela" (by the argentinian writer Julio Cortazar, in spanish), and I am reading "Das Glasperlenspiel" (by the german writer Herman Hesse). Both are very interesting, although a bit long. I don't know if the english translations are good.
A long time ago I read the short book "L'Etranger" (by the french author Albert Camus). I read the portuguese translation, and I found it very interesting...
Bruno, thank you for your recommendations! I think I will try L'Etranger or Rayuela for now, if I find english translted books in Amazon. Das Glasperenspiel is something I read just before starting Lord of the rings :)
