A bit of Syracuse

We stayed in Syracuse overnight and had a little walk the next morning. My first impression of Syracuse is this lovely yard, which was steps away from our hostel.

We didn't have much time for Syracuse, so we limited our sightseeing list to main city square and harbor.

And on our way to the car we went through the street market. Sicilian markets differ from the markets I have been to. Vendors shout, or maybe even more appropriate word - scream about their prices and offers. It is very noisy, smelly and colorful in there. Tradition of shouting and bargain comes from Arabs who occupied Sicily in 11 century. In fact Arabs also influenced Sicilian food, which is now half Italian half Arabic. One of the most famous dished of Sicily is couscous. Besides, many Sicilians still speak in dialect, which is a mixture of Italian and Arabic.
